In Gratitude

Sometimes it just takes a moment for us to change our perspective and sometimes that moment seems like the hardest thing in the world to make space and time for; it feels impossible.
But I believe that the fastest way to create positive change is to find gratitude and embrace it. Wrap your arms, your heart and your soul around it and hold on tight, the magic is there.
Sometimes it is something small, something seemingly infinitesimal in the middle of chaos or loss or madness but it's always there.
For me that gratitude starts with daily practice, a moment when I can breathe and slow myself and create so when the rest of the day is a blur, or a tear to the heart or a chronic out breath of busyness I can always take a moment to sit in gratitude

These moments were with me in the midst of driving back and forth between family and home, too-short visits with beloveds, getting back into the rhythm of work and homeschool, tidying the house and making up schedules and in the midst of the ongoing complications parents sometimes face with the testy, lovely practice of raising human beings- life's sticky like that, isn't?....

I am grateful for:

Ferns in the snow and a silent concrete bunny hidden in fronds......

Bees and the memory of so many of them swarming my lavender bushes in Portland, Oregon......

Gnomes who seek their own adventures and opportunities to commune with nature......

String lights in the dark parts of the year......

Wool to process from my own sheep............

A treadmill with a felting table on top so I can walk (ever so carefully) while I felt.......

Constant, glorious sunrises and sunsets..........

Canada geese overhead reminding me to stay light, sing loud and find my rhythm with others.....

2014 A Gnome A Day- Day 149 (a no show)

I believe this to be another no show day though I can't be sure, I was pretty sure that this was the day I was too tired during all the planting to make it to gnoming. Regardless, I have to assign it to a date so this one, I'm pretty sure is the right one.

I believe there is no gnome for May 29, 2014

2014 A Gnome A Day- Day 136 (no show)

Oh my, this is very unusual- I forgot to make a gnome!! Ack! I actually went to bed feeling amazed at how much I had managed to get done and that I had done everything on my daily docket- even a gnome. That's right, I actually thought I had made one that morning- but I had done no such thing. So, Day 136 was one very full and accomplished day but there is no gnome which I find very disappointing....

2014 A Gnome A Day- Day 105

It's been days, I know. So much for posting consistency but between work and sick kiddos, I have been rather tired.

That said, everyday made a gnome, in the morning before the day had truly grown in momentum.

This particular gnome was made when I woke up to snow on the ground and had to take deep breaths and assure myself that Spring really is around the corner. It was the day of the Blood Moon (yes, it was a full moon but I symbolized the moon as a crescent on his hat) and I felt that I had to do something extra special and it was as I made him that I realized he would live here among the houseplants on my little Gnomestead. He is full of magic and moon energy- wise and calm and full of serenity.....

ANNOUNCEMENT: A Book Deal for the Gnome A Day!!

There will be a book!

The first year spent making gnomes was quite an adventure in more ways than I could have possibly imagined. And in the new year of 2013 I decided to write about what that year of gnomes had been like. Now, that memoir is being published. I am happy to announce a book deal for the year I spent making gnomes and all the adventures that happened.

You can see a link to the announcement here: http://laurieabkemeier.tumblr.com/post/80797808756/deal-announcement
